Despite a narrow victory against LSU to start the season (3-0), Alabama didn't get much of a challenge in racking up 11 regular season wins and a third consecutive SEC title. The Crimson Tide met the Southwest Conference co-champions Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl and won pretty easily by a score of 24-9. The University of Alabama had successfully defended its national championship for coach Bear Bryant.
